Do you need to get health insurance as an ex-pat in the Czech Republic?\u00a0<\/strong><\/h4>

Czech law requires anyone staying in the country to have health insurance, but not everyone qualifies to receive coverage from the state.<\/b><\/p>

From August 2021, foreigners with long-term residence are required to buy a health insurance\u00a0<\/b>contract with the commercial branch of V\u0161eobecn\u00e1 zdravotn\u00ed poji\u0161\u0165ovna (VZP), officially known as\u00a0<\/span>Poji\u0161\u0165ovna VZP (PZVP)<\/a>, for five years.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>

What is commercial health insurance?<\/span>
<\/span><\/strong><\/h3>
Commercial health insurance is a private contract between the insured person (the ex-pat) and the insurance company. It is available to foreigners staying in the Czech Republic (or those applying for residence) who are not included in the public health insurance system.<\/span>

Who qualifies for commercial health insurance coverage?<\/span>
<\/span><\/span><\/h3>
Ex-pats staying in the Czech Republic based on a long-term visa or a long-term residence permit with the purpose of business are not included in the public health insurance system and must buy commercial comprehensive\u00a0 health insurance from PVZP.\u00a0<\/span>

That includes:<\/span><\/p>

  • Ex-pats with resident permit or long-term visa (for business, study, family reunification).\u00a0<\/li>
  • Ex-pats who are self-employed in the Czech Republic.\u00a0<\/li>
  • Third-country nationals living in the Czech Republic three months or longer.\u00a0<\/li><\/ul>
